Flue pipes create sound in a similar fashion to how a human gets sound out of a flute.
There are two basic pipe types: flue and reed. Providing English, German and other pipe name translations is beyond the scope here. Modartt being French, we get pipes with French names. The factory presets all have the same assignment of pipe ranks to the three manuals and pedalboard. Organteq contains one instrument called Church Organ (I think it’s likely that more instruments will be released in future), and this instrument provides the basis for several factory presets. The sound is already quite good as things stand, but it may get even better in future releases. Finally, remember this is just version 1. Even an expert organist listener who was given no encouragement to listen critically would probably not think to question that the source was synthetic. A non-expert listener would almost certainly be unable to tell whether this was a modelled vs. Let me leave this discussion with this observation. Organs normally reside in voluminous, reverberant spaces. I assume many people’s first question will be “how realistic is the sound compared to the sample-based competition?” Unfortunately, that’s not so easily answered. As far as I know, Modartt sales are at best infrequent and selective, so patience is unlikely to be rewarded.

An Organteq license generously allows installation on three separate computers (that’s assuming the terms are the same as with Pianoteq, which is probably the case). Activation is dongle-free and can be done even with no internet connection, although direct internet activation makes the process much easier. Organteq is available as a standalone application and as a plug-in in formats compatible with all current mainstream 64-bit DAWs. In Organteq, Modartt has tackled another keyboard mainstay, the pipe organ. Although I have never had the opportunity to play with Pianoteq, I know it has a sterling reputation as a compellingly good piano that uses mathematical modelling, which is no small achievement. Modartt’s flagship product is Pianoteq, first released in 2006 and now up to version 6. On its own web pages you will find the company name and the names of its products written in both all upper-case and in title-case, so we assume either will be acceptable. Modartt is short for “Models and data for arts and technologies”. In other words, there’s a generous amount of brain power on tap in the company’s facilities. Modartt, the company behind Organteq, is a French operation staffed with PhDs in physics and mathematics. Organteq works its magic by modeling the behavior of air in an organ pipe via calculations and rendering the result into audio. While a number of virtual pipe organs are currently available, all are sample-based. Organteq is the first virtual instrument of its kind: a pipe organ that produces its sounds based upon mathematical calculations. In Organteq we have a virtual pipe organ that produces a fully credible sound through the magic … ahem, we mean science … of applied mathematical computations.
